About Us

Electric Spec is a tri-annual webzine founded in 2005 by four diligent, yet busy and therefore zombie-eyed editors: Lesley Smith, David Hughes, Renata Hill, and Georgia Simonds. Our goal is solely to publish excellent short stories in the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and the macabre that enable aspiring and established authors to demonstrate their skills and provide readers with a brief, entertaining respite from normal life.

We publish three times a year and pay a flat fee of $20 for accepted work. The money comes from our own pockets as does the cost of maintaining this website. Sure, we're small now, but maybe some day, we'll be, well, big. More detailed information about writers' guidelines is available at Submission Guidelines.

Our Current Editors

Betsy Dornbusch

Snowboarding is a newfound passion for Betsy. Writing has taught her to ride the backside with a measure of faith. Besides writing fantasy novels and short fiction, she's on a one-woman crusade to rename a Winter Park black run "Publication." When it comes to stories she likes dark twists of fate, character, or emotion that leaves her rethinking what she knows. She's best known on the Internet for her blog: sexscenesatstarbucks.blogspot.com.

Renata Baron Hill

Renata, a founding editor, recently switched to a new medication that has enabled her to better appreciate the rich weirdness of China Miéville's novels, the complex settings of Frank Herbert's earlier worlds, and the strange, feminist-loves-phantasm themes in the works of Laurell K. Hamilton. When not researching obscure marketing facts about Fords for wealthy corporate clients or writing scintillating software documentation for moody SQL developers, she adores reading the genres of fantasy, science fiction, alternative history, and the macabre. She was first published at the tender age of 6, spent adolescence and young adulthood plumbing the depths of life's ironies in short story form and non-fiction articles, and now hopes to nestle into the mantle of "famous novelist" once her current military science fiction thriller is complete.

David E. Hughes

While meditating in a forested mountain glade, David achieved enlightenment. Unfortunately, a tree fell on his head immediately afterwards. No one heard the tree fall, but the impact somehow replaced his state of enlightenment with a passion for speculative fiction. His short fiction has received some recognition, but not nearly enough to satisfy the members of his fan club (who shall remain anonymous). His non-fiction has been published in several books and magazines. When not churning out masterful speculative fiction, David toils at his day job, churning out masterful briefs as a county attorney.

Lesley L. Smith

Lesley says she is a super fantastic speculative fiction writer along the lines of Asimov meets Heinlein meets Willis. She may be prone to a wee bit of hyperbole from time to time. During the day, a shadowy government agency pays her to investigate scientific conundrums such as global warming. Lesley lives in the Republic of Boulder with her collection of pets and diplomas, or was that pet diplomas? www.lesleylsmith.com
